10 Reasons You Need To Make Jannah A Priority

“My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.”

The topic of Jannah is one that is vast. When you look within the Qur’an and ahadith of our Prophet ﷺ, you will find many descriptions of paradise. Likewise, the same is true for hellfire. May Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala protect us and our families from the fire of hell. Scholars in the past would extract these descriptions and author books describing paradise and hellfire. As Muslims, we are commanded by Allah in the Qur’an to not only seek protection and safety from the hellfire, but to also make Jannah our objective.
Here’s why:

1. The commandment in the Qur’an
Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala says in the Qur’an,

وَسَارِعُوا إِلَىٰ مَغْفِرَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا السَّمَاوَاتُ وَالْأَرْضُ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
“And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous”
{Surah Ali-‘Imran 3: Verse 133}

Any command we find in the Qur’an must be followed without questioning. Even if it goes against our intellects and reasoning, Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala has made the matter clear so we listen and obey.

2. The Everlasting Bliss
In this Dunya, people may not get everything they desire or wish. They may not have the financial means or even, the physical means. But in paradise, Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala will bless whomsoever He wishes with whatever they desire. Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala says,

نَحْنُ أَوْلِيَاؤُكُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَا تَشْتَهِي أَنفُسُكُمْ وَلَكُمْ فِيهَا مَا تَدَّعُونَ
We were your allies in the worldly life and in the hereafter. And you will have therein whatever your souls desire, and you will have therein whatever you request
{Surah Fussilat 41: Verse 31}

We were not created for this Dunya and never did Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala promise us that we would receive everything and anything we want in this Dunya. This world is only a transient phase, a test from Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ said,

“The world is a prison-house for a believer and a paradise for a non-believer.”
[Sahih Muslim]

3. The Delights of Paradise
The Prophet ﷺ said,

“Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala said, I have prepared for my righteous slaves (such excellent things) as no eye has ever seen, nor an ear has ever heard nor a human heart can ever think of.”
[Sahih Muslim]

Just imagine paradise, now realise that it is nothing compared to what you just thought. It is better! For this reason, the companion Abdullah Ibn Abbas radi-allahu-anhu said that only the names of things in paradise are the same as that which exist in this life. For example, Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala mentions the fruits in paradise like grapes and pomegranates in the Qur’an but are they like the ones that we have in this Dunya? Are the grapes of Jannah like that which we buy at the supermarket? No, it is only the name that is the same.

4. The removal of difficulty and grief
Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala says in the Qur’an,

وَقَالُوا الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَذْهَبَ عَنَّا الْحَزَنَ إِنَّ رَبَّنَا لَغَفُورٌ شَكُورٌ
“And they will say, Praise to Allah, who has removed from us [all] sorrow. Indeed, our Lord is Forgiving and Appreciative”
{Surah Fatir 35: Verse 34}

5. The Ultimate Success
Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala says in the Qur’an,

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَمَن زُحْزِحَ عَنِ النَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ
“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your[full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted into Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.”
{Surah Ali-‘Imran 3: verse 185}

For us, success may mean a good education, a good job, a good house but Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala mentions that the ultimate success which supersedes all these types of successes is safety from the Hellfire and entry into Jannah.

6. Be with whom you love
In this Dunya, we may not have the opportunity to be with those whom we love, mainly our family due to our busy daily life; work, studying etc. However, when people enter Jannah, they will be with their families,

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَاتَّبَعَتْهُمْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُم بِإِيمَانٍ أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَمَا أَلَتْنَاهُم مِّنْ عَمَلِهِم مِّن شَيْءٍ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٌ
“And those who believe and whose descendants follow them in faith, We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds. Every person, for what he earned, is retained.”
{Surah At-Tur 52: verse 21}

7. Be in the company of The Prophets,  Martyrs,Truthful and Righteous
Once a sahabi became upset because he thought once he died, he would be separated from the Prophet ﷺ given the Prophet’s ﷺ status which would be at a higher level than the rest of the people of Jannah. Such was this companion’s love for the Prophet ﷺ that he wanted his companionship in the Dunya and the Akhirah. He went and told this to the Prophet ﷺ and the Prophet ﷺ remained silent. Then Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala revealed the verse,

وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّنَ النَّبِيِّينَ وَالصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ وَحَسُنَ أُولَٰئِكَ رَفِيقًا
“And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favors of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.”{Surah Nisa 4: verse 69}

This is not just for this specific companion but people like you and me have this opportunity.

8. Part of Iman
Some of the deviant groups do not believe that people will suffer in hellfire for eternity but this clearly goes against the Qur’an. From the belief of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah, is that paradise and hellfire will be eternal. Those who disbelieved and associated partners with Allah will be wretched in the hellfire. Everyone who had an atom’s weight of Iman will eventually be in paradise by the mercy of Allah. There will be Muslims who will have to enter the hellfire first because of their sins but after they have become purified, Allah will allow them to enter into paradise. It is reported in an authentic hadith that on the day of Judgement, death will be brought forth in the form of a ram. The people of paradise and hellfire will be called to see this ram, and Allah will slaughter this ram to signify that there will be no more death. The people of hellfire after the continuous torment and pain will wish for death because it is easy for them to bare that instead of this punishment and the people of paradise after seeing all the delights prepared for them and enjoying Allah’s bounties will become scared because they will think that this enjoyment will end with death. But after seeing the slaughtering of this ram, both parties will come to realise their abodes will be eternal.

Abu Sa’id reported Allah’s Messenger ﷺ as saying: Death would be brought on the Day of Resurrection. in the form of a white-coloured ram. Abu Kuraib made this addition: Then it would be made to stand between the Paradise and the Hell. So far as the rest of the hadith is concerned there is perfect agreement (between the two narrators) and it would be said to the inmates of Paradise: Do you recognise this? They would raise up their necks and look towards it and say: Yes, ‘ it is death. Then it would be said to the inmates of Hell-Fire.. Do you recognise this? And they would raise up their necks and look and say: Yes, it is death. Then command would be given for slaughtering that and then it would be said: 0 inmates of Paradise,, there is an everlasting life for you and no death. And then (addressing) to the inmates of the Hell-Fire, it would be said: 0 inmates of Hell-Fire, there is an everlasting living for you and no death. Allah’s Messenger ﷺ then recited this verse pointing with his hand to this (material) world:
“And warn them, [O Muhammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded; and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe.”
{Surah Maryam 19: Verse 39}

9. Drinking from the fountain of the Prophet ﷺ
On the day of Judgement, when the sun will be brought close to the heads of people, they will be sweating according to their deeds. Some profusely and others, not so much. This is when Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala will give each Ummah through their Prophets a pond to drink from. Our Prophet ﷺ will be waiting for us at his pond. The water will be colder than ice and sweeter than milk. After drinking from this pond, there will be no more thirst! The people of Jannah will then drink for pleasure. The name of this fountain is Al Kawthar.

Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: Whilst we were with the Prophet , he dozed off then he raised his head and he was smiling. We said, “Why are you smiling, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “A Surah has been revealed to me.” And he recited (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, We have granted you (O Muhammad) Al-Kawthar (a river in Paradise)…”
{Surah Al-Kawthar 108: Verse 1} 

Till the end of the Surah. Then he said: “Do you know what is Al-Kawthar?” We said: Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “It is a river that my Lord has promised to me in which there is much goodness. And it is a cistern to which my ummah will come on the Day of Resurrection.”

Al-Tirmidhi (3284) narrated from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet said: “Al-Kawthar is a river in Paradise. Its banks are made of gold and its bed is of pearls and rubies…”.

Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whilst I was walking in Paradise, I saw a river whose banks were domes of hollow pearls.” I said, “What is this, O Jibreel?” He said: “This is al-Kawthar which your Lord has given to you.” The angel struck it with his hand and its mud or its perfume was of the most fragrant (or pure) musk.

10. Seeing Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala
This by far is the greatest reason why we should be aiming for paradise. In fact, seeing Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala will be the greatest favour that is bestowed upon the people of Jannah.

The Prophet ﷺ said, “When the inhabitants of Jannah enter Jannah, Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala, the Glorious and Exalted, will say to them: ‘Do you wish me to give you anything more?’ They will reply: ‘Have You not made our faces bright? Have You not brought us into Jannah and delivered us from the Hell?’ And Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala will remove the Veil. The (dwellers of Jannah) will feel that they have not been awarded anything dearer to them than looking at their Rabb.”
[Sahih Muslim]

As for the disbeliever; the one who disbelieved in the meeting with Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala, rejected the Qur’an and the Prophetﷺ, this is something that they will be denied from receiving.

Allah has given us descriptions of Jannah and Jahannam, one to seek and the latter to seek protection from. Thus, as Muslims, we must strike a balance. We fear Allah and his punishment because it is severe but at the same time, we have hope, hope in his mercy that will accelerate our limbs in doing good deeds taking us closer to the everlasting abode of success.

May Allah Subhanahu-wa-Taala grant us Jannah, and may He give us the opportunity to see Him, Subhanahu wa ta’ala.
