Al Kahf Challenge – Verse 102 (Memorize + Learn Tafsir)

Rabbi Zidnee Ilman
“My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.”

Afahasiba allatheena kafarooan yattakhithoo AAibadee min doonee awliyaainna aAAtadna jahannama lilkafireena nuzula
Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.

Tafsir & Explanation
This Ayah is an attack on shirk – a severe warning to those who take Isa aleyhi salaam, angels, saints, elders, idols, etc as their Auliya’. In Surah Al-Qasas 28:64, Allah سبحانه و تعالى says that those who worshiped others besides Him will be instructed to call upon their “Gods” for help, but they will not be answered – and this is part of their psychological torment.

Allah is asking us if we think asking those apart from Allah is right? Allah is questioning do we think we will not be punished? Indeed we will be punished and there is a severe punishment for those who accept other than Allah as their helpers and awliya. It angers Allah and they are never helped by those whom they call upon.

The word Ibaad عِبَادِ – servants has been used.  What does this word ibaad include? ALL THE CREATION OF ALLAH! We learn from Surah Al Maryam

There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant.
{Surat Maryam 19: Verse 93}

There are many people who have taken SERVANTS/PROPHETS OF ALLAH as AWLIYA. They call upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , they pray to him, they ask him for help although he has passed away. Similarly we have many who pray to Isa (aleyhi salaam). The word Ibaad doesn’t just mean prophets it also includes righteous servants of Allah. We know the story of Musa (aleyhi salaam) and Khidr. There are people who think Khidr is alive and he helps us, so they literally pray to him.

Similarly there are more ignorant people who worship angels, jinns, Sun, Moon and think they are their Awliya. That if they pray to them they will be responded and that if they ask for help to them they will be assisted. These ignorant people have taken SERVANTS OF ALLAH as ARBABAM MIN DOONILLAH (As lords instead of Allah). There is no one more foolish than these people. They think if they pray to The Sun – it will help them. If they pray to someone who has passed away the dead will help them.

Here is another scary part of the Ayah: نُزُلًا Nuzul] refers to initial hospitality, like how we would serve tea to our guests before the big meal arrives. What is prepared for a guest before he arrives?
– His Food.
– Where is he going to stay?
– His bed.
– His Room.
– His Lodging.
– What are the activities he is going to be engaged in during his stay.
All of the above is included in Nuzul.  Nuzul comes from the word NAZALA – which means “to descend”. And lets remember that Nuzul is prepared before the guest arrives.
This Ayah is therefore an irony to these disbelievers: their [nuzul] / initial treat / entertainment will be Jahannam itself, SubhanAllah! Jahannam is being described as ENTERTAINMENT!
Hellfire will be their destination after their life on Earth. their death, their barzaq and after the day of Judgment.

And what is prepared for these people?
– Beds of Fire.
– Walls of Fire.
– Coverings of Fire.
– The Food that is of Zaqqoom – Muhool.
– The Companionship of those who are rebuking them. Those who are constantly fighting and arguing with them.

Say, [O Muhammad], “Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds?
[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work.”
{Surat Al Kahf 18: Verses 103-104}

This ayah tells us that any person who calls upon other than Allah whether is a mushriq or the one who claims to be a believer then he falls into the category of this ayaah.

“..Innahu man yushrik billahi faqadharrama Allahu AAalayhi aljanna..”
“..Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise..”
{Surat Al Ma’idah 5: Verse 72}

May Allah سبحانه و تعالى protect us from the Hell fire and grant us the highest level of Jannah, ameen ya rabbul alameen.
