Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], ‘Believe in your Lord,’ and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous.

Explanation
Our study of the Rabbana Duas in the Quran has brought us alhumdolillah to the concluding verses of Sura Al-Imran. Each dua brings us face to face with people that impress us with their piety and insight and whose extraordinary supplications give us a glimpse into their exceptional characters.

Rabbana Dua #15 is verse number 193 of Surat Al-Imran. ‘Those of understanding’ are still addressing their Rubb and we are invited to reflect upon their reflections. The journey into the Quran opens for us a window into their thoughts. They have contemplated upon the vastness of the heavens and the earth, perceived the perfection of His creation and have tuned in to the moral compass of their own souls. They are awed by the majesty of Allah’s creation and troubled by the injustice and oppression rampant in society and have pleaded with Allah to protect them from the humiliating punishment of the Fire.

Place yourself in their shoes for a moment. Let the reality of your surroundings fade away and imagine that you are one of the ‘people of understanding’. What sounds do you hear? Was their world a cacophony of loud noises and disturbing emotions; music, traffic, shouting, revenge, greed, stress, regret and remorse? Or is theirs a more quiet reality. They can hear the sound of their own thoughts and the whole Universe speaks to them. They are privy to the praise of the trees and the birds and their souls feel the sublime connection with the Divine.

Within the context of their reality imagine another voice is raised that calls to belief in the One and Only Lord of the heavens and the earth. They gravitate towards that call with their whole heart and soul because it is a confirmation of everything they already know and feel and have intellectually concluded on their own. They do not question or object. They do not ask, “Is this sunnah or fard? Is this really for the 21st miraculous nature of the Universe has already won them over. They simply submit their desires to the haqq (truth) and proclaim, “We have believed.”

Before the advent of modern technology there were also vast gatherings of knowledge. Someone from the row closest to the scholar would get up and repeat his words and then another person a few rows down would repeat them and the process would continue until the whole congregation had been informed. The ‘munadi’ (caller) referred to in this ayat is Rasulallah salallahu alihi wasuillum and by extension his heirs, the scholars, and every believer who stands anywhere upon the scrolls of time and testifies with his tongue and actions that there is no Ilah except Allah and invites others to worship Him alone.

Reflection

  • Devote your talent and time to serve the deen and your name will be written with the righteous, inshallah. The parting advice of Rasulallah saallahu alaihi wasullum to his Ummah was,
    “All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly…”
  • Seek moments of seclusion and reflection within the chaos of the day and preferably seek solitude with Allah in the night.
  • People have ‘career goals’ but believers should have ‘character goals’ also. Let the exceptional character of Rasulallah salallahu alaihi wasullum be your guide and emulate and imitate his sunnah and gradually try to inculcate his routine into your life.
  • Righteous company makes the burden of existence bearable in this world. Aim high, literally and figuratively, when it comes to the companionship of the Hereafter by obeying Allah and His Messenger salallahu alaihi wasullum.

And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger – those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and century?” They do not ask for miracles because the the righteous. And excellent are those as companions.
{Surat An-Nisa 4 : Verse 69}

Please memorize this Rabbana dua and share it with your friends and family.
