Practical Qur’an Memorization Tips

Practical quran memorization tips

Rabbi Zidnee Ilman
“My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.”

1. Intentions
If it isn’t purely for Allah then your time and efforts go to waste. Not only do you not get rewards, you are in jeporday of earning sins. So it is a BIG deal! You will naturally struggle with your intentions, this is a sign that you are a believer so don’t despair, rejoice  and continue to pray in your sujood for proper intentions

2. Dua
Your greatest weapon and link to Allah. It costs you nothing so dont be stingy with it. Use and abuse it! Allah is the only ONE who doesnt get annoyed at our constant nagging and asking. He LOVES that we turn to HIM and is SHY not to answer. There is a etiquette in making dua and know that Allah doesnt respond to the heart that is absent minded! FOCUS when praying and be sincere.

And your Lord says: Call upon Me, I will answer you; surely those who are too proud to worship Me shall soon enter hell abased.
{Surat Ghafir 40: Verse 60}

3. Goal/Plan
Those who fail to plan, plan to FAIL! I cant stress that enough! So set your goals, write them down and let them be concrete! Let them be REALISTIC and CONSISTENT.

4. When to Memorize?
The best time to memorize is at Fajr time. When it came to Fajr, He did not even call it salat al-Fajr, He says Quran al-Fajr, “The Quran of Fajr. So what does that tell you?

إِنَّ قُرْآنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًا
“…Indeed the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.”
{Surat Al Isra 17: Verse 78}

5. Sleep
Follow the sunnah and get rewarded for sleeping! How? Make the intention to get up early and have enough energy to stay up and recite. Many of us cant even keep our eyes open at Fajr let alone recite so sleep early and wake up early. You will see alot of results and accomplish much much more In shaa Allah! Guaranteed!

Have Wudu!
USE:  Recite the Qur’an (or) House of Qur’an (Memorization Tool)

1. Listen to ONE Ayah at a time. Following with your finger as you listen to the reciter recite the Ayah. Do not be hasty and let it repeat until you feel like you can recite along with him. (Depends on your level, I still listen to him anywhere from 5-15 times depending on the length of the Ayah and its level of “difficulty” depending on vocab etc). You dont want to memorize while saying the words incorrectly!
2. Then Mute the reciter and recite on your own while STILL following with your hand. (10-20 times).
3. Recite with your eyes closed. If you did step 1 & 2 then you should see the Ayaah in your head!  No its not magic, your brain has taken a screen shot of your Mus-haf! Its almost like cheating isnt it. Repeat the Ayah 10-2- times or more.
4. You are done with that Ayah now. Repeat the steps for the second Ayaah.
5. Now join Ayaah 1 and Ayaah 2 together and repeat 5 times.
6. Continue this until you are done with your lesson. If you follow these direction I guarantee (Bithn’Allah) that you will memorize and not (completely) forget EVER!

☆ Mus-haf/Kitaab ☆
Use the SAME one for all your memorization and recitation! This way you dont confuse your brain by using different ones that have different script etc. I would recommend the Color coded Tajweed Mus-haf. No guessing game, its all there! Sisters you can use the online one when you are not “clean”.

Reciter – Sudais is a household name and we all grew up listening to him, but DO NOT memorize by listening to him. His recitations are recorded during Qiyam.Tarweeh and thus the proper Tajweed is NOT applied. I would recommend;

– Sheikh Abdullah Al-Matrood
– Al-Husary
– Sa’ad Al-Gamdi
– Minshaway
– AbuBakr Ashatiri

READ OUT LOUD! If you recite in your head or whispering trust me you wont get anywhere. You need to hear yourself and correct possible mistakes. Dont scream but be moderate.

☆ Tajweed ☆
SOOOO VITAL! The Quran MUST be recited in tajweed. Quran was revealed with Tajweed. Tajweed isnt having a pretty voice, rather it is giving every letter and word its right. For example if there are two people with the thickest accent possible (lets pick nigera and India) and they are taught the correct tajweed then walahi if you had them two recite along side a original arabic speaker you would NOT be able to DIFFERENTIATE! Quran without Tajweed is not Quran! Tajweed is just the science of reciting and the rules that were written down for non arab speakers to learn the Quran. Below is a class you can follow from the comfort of your own home!

☆ Teacher ☆
You need to have someone to listen to your recitation and correct it. Find a teacher or a friend or a parent. ANYONE! If you have a younger relative who has learned then dont be ashamed to ask them to listen to you. I have my 11 year old brother listen to me at times walahi! As long as they know it then USE them.

☆ Review ☆
Review your past memorization. Maybe after maghrib Salah OR even IN YOUR SALAH! Reviewing is very important.

Narrated Abu Musa: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Keep on reciting the Qur’an, for, by Him in Whose Hand my life is, Qur’an runs away (is forgotten) faster than camels that are released from their tying ropes.”
[Sahih al-Bukhari 5033]

☆ Qiyaam ☆

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The Lord descends every night to the lowest heaven when one-third of the night remains and says: ‘Who will call upon Me, that I may answer Him? Who will ask of Me, that I may give him? Who will seek My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?’”
[Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

They say if you REALLY want something and you are not getting up at night to pray to Allah then you don’t really want it. Allah asks us what we want but we are too comfortable in our sleep to ask. Get up 30 minutes before Fajr and ask Allah for whatever it is that you want. He is Near and Responsive!

☆ Qur’an Buddy/Qur’an Help Group ☆
Have someone to motivate and encourage you. Be competitive and RACE: A friend, sibling, parent or even a spouse… Some healthy competition.

It is these who race for the good deeds, and they are foremost in them.
{Surat Al-Mu’minūn 23: Verse 61}

Oh Allah, make the Qur’an the spring of our hearts, and the light of my chests, the banisher of my sadness and the reliever of my distress. Ameen Ya Rabb!

“The Qur’an is like a friend…the longer the friendship lasts the more you’ll know of its secrets, as a friend doesn’t reveal his secrets to someone who sits with him for a few minutes and then leaves…”
– [Sh. Muhammad al-`Awaji]

Prophet Muhammad - "Convey (knowledge) from me even if it is just one ayah" [Bukhari 3461]
